Ravichandran Ashwin’s future with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about topics ahead of the IPL 2026 mini auction. The veteran off-spinner, who returned to his home franchise after almost a decade, has reportedly sought clarity from CSK management on their plans for him next season. At 37, Ashwin has made it clear that if he doesn’t fit into their long-term vision, he is open to moving on.

CSK splashed INR 9.75 crore to bring Ashwin back during the IPL 2025 mega auction, but the comeback didn’t unfold as hoped. He featured in just nine of the team’s 14 league games — his lowest appearance count in a season since his debut in 2009. Adding to the frustration, his economy rate soared to 9.12, the highest in his IPL career, surpassing his previous worst of 8.49.

With the IPL 2026 auction dates yet to be confirmed, retention discussions will hinge on the schedule. The annual mini auction, typically held between November and February, is preceded by a trade window that remains open until a week before the auction — giving CSK and Ashwin some breathing room to decide.

The off-spinner himself fueled speculation during a recent YouTube conversation with Sanju Samson, hinting at a possible trade. A departure would also mean stepping down from his role as Director of Operations at the CSK Academy to avoid conflicts of interest.

Meanwhile, leadership at CSK is another hot topic. MS Dhoni returned as captain mid-season in 2025 after Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury, but his own future remains uncertain until pre-season assessments.

If Dhoni opts out, Gaikwad is expected to reclaim the reins. Internal strategy meetings in Chennai — attended by Dhoni, Gaikwad, and senior management — are believed to have covered both captaincy and retention calls. Despite a challenging 2025, Ashwin’s IPL legacy remains formidable: 187 wickets in 221 matches at an economy of 7.29, along with 833 runs at a strike rate of 118 — a testament to his enduring value in the league.
