The legendary Australian captain Ricky Ponting recently shared his perspective on MS Dhoni’s evolving role with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Speaking on The ICC Review with Sanjana Ganesan, Ponting delved into Dhoni’s journey, especially his recent resurgence after a difficult season two years ago.
Ricky Ponting observed how Dhoni, despite his advancing age and changing role, returned to form last season, showing flashes of the Dhoni of old with impactful performances. Reflecting on the upcoming 2025 IPL season, Ponting speculated that CSK might carefully manage Dhoni’s involvement, perhaps by resting him for occasional games to preserve his effectiveness throughout the season.

MS Dhoni’s influence, Ponting explained, transcends his on-field role. “Whether he’s captaining, batting, or just supporting from the sidelines, his leadership is invaluable to CSK,” Ricky Ponting said. “Dhoni’s presence alone has a calming, guiding impact on the team, and his mentorship qualities make him an essential figure regardless of whether he’s actively playing.”
Ponting also touched upon Dhoni’s strategic shift down the batting order, where he now often bats in the last overs. Though his batting appearances are brief, Dhoni still wields a massive impact, scoring 161 runs in 14 matches last season at an astonishing strike rate of 220.55. This “finisher” role allows him to leverage his experience and timing to change the game in CSK’s favor within a handful of balls.

“MS continues to prove that great players maintain their impact, adapting their game even as they age,” Ricky Ponting noted. For CSK, Dhoni’s enduring value lies in both his short bursts with the bat and his unshakable leadership, ensuring his legacy with the franchise remains as strong as ever.
