Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) clash against Delhi Capitals (DC) in Dharamsala on May 8 was abruptly called off midway through the first innings due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. The decision was made prioritising the safety of players, officials, broadcasters, and fans amid the unfolding geopolitical situation.

In response, the BCCI suspended the IPL 2025 season for a week, triggering a wave of uncertainty across franchises. As the league paused, many overseas players and coaching staff began making arrangements to return home. According to reports, PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting, along with all the foreign players in Shreyas Iyer’s squad, had already boarded a flight out of India.

However, things took an unexpected turn once a ceasefire agreement was signed between India and Pakistan. In a dramatic moment that underlined his leadership credentials, Ponting stepped off the aircraft and persuaded his fellow overseas players to do the same. Australian cricketers Xavier Bartlett and Aaron Hardie were reportedly anxious about the situation, but a timely pep talk from Ponting reassured them.

PBKS CEO Satish Menon lauded Ponting’s intervention, calling it a testament to the Australian legend’s strength of character. “Only Ricky could have pulled that off,” Menon told India Today.

A source close to the team added that the overseas contingent, led by Marcus Stoinis, was set on leaving but was swayed by Ponting’s calm assurance. “They were understandably nervous. But Ponting stepping in made all the difference,” the source revealed.
