Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting thinks that India’s wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant is the right choice for being the deputy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the upcoming ICC World Cup which is scheduled to start on May 30 in England and Wales. As the squad of the upcoming World Cup has not been picked yet, Pointing is hopeful for Rishabh Pant as he said that some good knocks in the upcoming IPL for Delhi Capitals would help Pant getting selected in the squad.
However, Rishabh Pant didn’t have a successful ODI series. As Ms Dhoni rested, Pant got the chance to play in the final two encounters against Australia. Along with the bat, he missed some opportunities for dismissals as well. Even, people were chanting Dhoni’s name in Mohali when Pant missed a couple of stumping chances during the fourth One-Day International between India and Australia.

“I think it’s actually a big job for me and the coaches when he comes in, to make him forget what’s happened in the last few days. He’s probably lucky it happened in the last couple of games. It would have been hard to play all five games under that kind of pressure. Now he’s back in a competition where he has dominated in the past,” Cricbuzz quoted Ponting as saying.
“If he can win a couple of games for us then everything will be forgotten. I can’t see anyone better than him as a second wicketkeeper in that Indian World Cup squad,” he further added.

The 21-year-old has a bright future ahead and has the ability to be Dhoni’s successor. However, this season IPL will play a big role in Pant’s career. As Dhoni likely to retire after the World Cup, Pant would get to play more matches then. So far, Pant has played 29 International matches where he amasses more than 1000 runs. The Delhi lad will become an asset for the India team in the near future.
