Rohit Sharma Became a Leader in 2008, Recalls Laxman

On Friday, India legend VVS Laxman revealed the time he knew Rohit Sharma would be a leader. He said that the current Indian opener became a leader in the Deccan Chargers team in 2008. He adds how Rohit’s and his ability to remain calm under pressure defines his success in the Indian Premier League as a captain.

Rohit Sharma is the most successful skipper in the Indian Premier League as of  2019 leading Mumbai Indians to 4 IPL titles. The Indian team limited-overs vice-captain was handed the responsibility midway through 2013.  He has never looked back since then and had a dream run in IPL for the last 7 years.

“He became a leader in the Deccan Chargers team. When he came in the first year, he was a youngster who just played the T20 World Cup, made his international debut for India,” VVS Laxman told Star Sports show ‘Cricket Connected’.

Laxman and Rohit Sharma were both a part of the Deccan Chargers who won IPL in 2009. Laxman revealed how a then youngster Rohit Sharma grew in stature. He shares how the Mumbaikar became an important cog in a Chargers squad filled with high-profile players.

“I think the way he was batting in the middle order, under pressure because the team didn’t do well in the inaugural IPL edition in 2008, but Rohit was a standout performer for us,” Laxman said

He added, “In each and every match, with each and every success, his confidence level was just growing. He was getting into the core group. Rohit was helping the youngsters, voicing his opinion and those were early signs. But for me, most importantly was handling the pressure. Because not once in those tough situations when he was batting did it show. He has evolved and blossomed. That’s why he’s one of the most successful captains in IPL history.”
