India’s chase of 195 against Afghanistan in the first ODI in Dharamsala got off to a promising start, but an unfortunate run-out of Rohit Sharma shifted the momentum early in the innings. The former India captain looked in rhythm during his short stay and gave India a strong launch before a costly mix-up with opening partner Shubman Gill brought his innings to an abrupt end.

Rohit had already shown positive intent, striking two boundaries and a six after surviving an early injury scare. For a brief period, India seemed in complete control with the opening pair moving fluently and keeping the required rate in check. But the communication breakdown between the two batters turned the chase on its head and handed Afghanistan a key breakthrough when they needed it most.

The dismissal came on the fourth ball of the sixth over, with India cruising at 46 for no loss. Afghanistan spinner AM Ghazanfar bowled a length delivery outside off stump, and Rohit nudged it gently towards the left of midwicket. Seeing a chance for a quick single, the veteran opener immediately set off and was already well down the pitch.

The problem came at the other end. Gill was briefly obstructed by the bowler’s follow-through and hesitated before responding. By the time he called Rohit back, the India batter had committed himself and was too far down to return safely.

Afghanistan reacted sharply in the field. Rashid Khan collected the ball quickly and threw it to wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who removed the bails in a flash. Rohit stretched full length in an effort to make his ground, but replays confirmed he was clearly short when the stumps were broken. The India opener was dismissed for 16 off 16 balls, with his knock including two fours and one six.

What stood out after the dismissal was Rohit’s reaction. The batter walked back looking visibly frustrated, without glancing toward Gill, a sign of how disappointed he was to throw away his wicket in such a careless manner.

The run-out was also a rare mode of dismissal for Rohit Sharma. It was only his second run-out in the last three years in international cricket, with both coming against Afghanistan. It was also his first ODI run-out since 2019, ending a long stretch without such a dismissal in the format.
