In a fitting tribute to one of Mumbai’s finest cricketing sons, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has decided to name a stand at the iconic Wankhede Stadium after India skipper Rohit Sharma. During its AGM held on April 15, the MCA approved this long-overdue recognition for the veteran opener, who has been a pillar of Indian cricket over the past decade.

According to reports, the Divesh Pavilion Level 3 will now bear Rohit Sharma’s name, adding him to an elite group of cricketing legends who have stands named after them at Wankhede — including the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Vijay Merchant, and Dilip Vengsarkar.

The move isn’t limited to Rohit alone — the Grand Stand Level 3 will be named after veteran administrator Sharad Pawar, while Grand Stand Level 4 will honor the late Ajit Wadekar, a former India captain and stalwart of Mumbai cricket. MCA President Ajinkya Naik also announced that a lounge would be named after Amol Kale.

Naik expressed that this initiative is more than symbolic — it’s a celebration of those who’ve built Mumbai’s cricketing identity. “These stands and this lounge shall forever echo the legacy of those who built Mumbai’s cricketing spirit — brick by brick, run by run,” he said, adding that the decision reflects deep respect for the pillars of the game.

Rohit Sharma’s influence on Indian cricket has been undeniable. Under his leadership, the national team clinched the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and the Champions Trophy 2025 — both times going undefeated, silencing critics and reaffirming India’s dominance on the world stage.

However, Rohit’s current form in IPL 2025 has been under the scanner. Representing Mumbai Indians, he’s struggled for rhythm as an Impact Player, registering scores of 0, 8, 13, 17, and 18 in his first five outings. While his attacking approach remains unchanged, the lack of substantial contributions has led to growing murmurs about his future in the shortest format.

Regardless of his recent form, a stand in his name at Wankhede is richly deserved — a permanent mark in the stadium where his cricketing journey began, and where his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
