For the first time in six years, Rohit Sharma has dropped out of the top 30 in the ICC Test rankings for batters. The 37-year-old’s form in the longest format has been underwhelming in the 2024-25 season, managing just 152 runs in 12 innings at a dismal average of 11.83. In the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Rohit struggled again in the second Test, registering single-digit scores in both innings.

Similarly, Virat Kohli has slipped six places to the 20th spot in the rankings following his underwhelming performances in the Adelaide Test, where he scored just seven and 11. Kohli’s drop comes despite his remarkable century in the first Test in Perth, which had raised hopes of a resurgence in his Test form.

Meanwhile, England’s Harry Brook has emerged as the new No. 1 Test batter after a phenomenal run against New Zealand. Brook has been in red-hot form, accumulating 349 runs in three innings at an incredible average of 116.33. His last three scores — 171, 123, and 55 — underline his consistency and dominance.

Harry Brook dethroned former England captain Joe Root, who had previously claimed the top spot from Kane Williamson earlier this year. Rohit and Kohli will aim to bounce back when India faces Australia in the third Test at the iconic Gabba in Brisbane, starting on Saturday, December 14.

With the series locked at 1-1, both players have an opportunity to regain form and help India reclaim momentum following their 10-wicket defeat in Adelaide’s pink-ball Test. On the other side of the globe, England has already sealed their Test series against New Zealand with back-to-back wins in Christchurch and Wellington.

Harry Brook, riding high on his prolific run, will look to extend his purple patch in the final Test. The third match of the series is set to commence at Seddon Park, Hamilton, on Sunday, December 15. Both Kohli and Rohit will hope to emulate Brook’s brilliance as India seeks redemption at Brisbane.
