During the Qualifier 2 match between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2023, Shubman Gill, the opener for GT, had quite a lucky escape not once, but three times, much to the frustration of MI captain Rohit Sharma. Shubman Gill had been in outstanding form throughout the tournament, accumulating 722 runs in 15 innings, and he continued his impressive run in the crucial match against MI.

Gill went on to score his third century of the season, showcasing his exceptional batting skills. However, his innings could have been cut short much earlier if MI had capitalized on the opportunities presented to them. In the fifth over, when Gill was batting on 30 off 18 balls, he attempted a lofted-on drive, which ended up in the vicinity of Tim David at mid-on.

David managed to get his hands on the ball, but couldn’t hold on to the catch. A couple of overs later, Gill, on 37 off 25 balls, played a shot against Kumar Kartikeya that resulted in an inside edge. The ball trickled back towards Ishan Kishan at a slow pace after hitting Gill’s pads, giving Gill enough time to return to the crease before Kishan could gather the ball.

And in the following delivery, Gill pulled the ball towards mid-wicket, narrowly missing Tilak Verma’s grasp, making it Gill’s third lucky break.

While Gill found humor in his fortunate escapes, Rohit Sharma was visibly frustrated witnessing his compatriot survive in such fortunate circumstances. The missed opportunities left the MI captain ruing the chances that could have turned the game in their favor. Despite the frustrations, both teams continued to battle it out in what promised to be an intense and thrilling encounter.
