Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad could not provide the answer millions of fans were hoping to hear after another disappointing IPL season ended for the five-time champions. Following CSK’s crushing 89-run defeat to Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad on May 21, the biggest talking point once again revolved around MS Dhoni and whether IPL 2026 marked the final chapter of his legendary career.

When asked about Dhoni’s future during the post-match presentation, Ruturaj Gaikwad admitted that even the dressing room remains uncertain about what lies ahead for the iconic wicketkeeper-batter. “You and I both will get to know it next year,” Gaikwad said, leaving fans with even more speculation surrounding Dhoni’s future in the IPL.
The defeat against the Gujarat Titans officially ended the Chennai Super Kings’ playoff hopes and confirmed a third consecutive season without a top-four finish. However, despite CSK’s struggles on the field, discussions around the franchise were once again dominated by Dhoni’s absence and possible retirement.

Ruturaj Gaikwad openly acknowledged the impact Dhoni continues to have on the team, both mentally and tactically. “It’s a hard miss. He is someone who puts fear in the opposition. He is someone who can change the momentum just by staying at the crease,” the CSK skipper added.
Unlike IPL 2025, where Dhoni had publicly hinted at continuing for another season, IPL 2026 felt completely different. Persistent injury concerns prevented the former India captain from making a proper return, while the uncertainty around his availability only intensified retirement rumours throughout the tournament.
For Chennai Super Kings supporters, the season was unusually emotional. Dhoni has remained the face of the franchise through every major chapter in CSK history — title triumphs, rebuilding phases, suspension years, dramatic comebacks, and leadership transitions. This time, however, even his future appeared uncertain.

The franchise itself also seems to be entering a clear transition period. Leadership responsibilities have already shifted fully to Ruturaj Gaikwad, while younger players like Dewald Brevis and Shaik Rasheed were given increased opportunities during IPL 2026. Even Dhoni’s involvement around the squad increasingly resembled that of a mentor rather than an active player.
Still, until MS Dhoni personally confirms his retirement, neither fans nor the franchise appear ready to accept that the end may already have arrived.

Beyond the emotional aspect, Chennai Super Kings now face significant cricketing concerns. Their defeat to the Gujarat Titans left them with just 12 points from 14 league matches alongside a negative net run rate. Injuries disrupted team combinations throughout the campaign, while the middle order and bowling unit lacked consistency during crucial moments. Dhoni’s absence only magnified those problems.
