Ruturaj Gaikwad’s innings in the ongoing first T20I against Australia was far from ideal, ending in a frustrating mix-up with his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal. The incident occurred at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam. Chasing a target of 209 runs, Yashasvi Jaiswal began aggressively, hitting a four and a six to kick off India’s chase.

However, on the fifth ball of the over, he made a costly error that led to Ruturaj Gaikwad’s dismissal. Jaiswal played a slower short ball from Marcus Stoinis towards the wide of fine leg, calling for a single before attempting a second run. Realizing the risk involved, he called back Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was already half-way down the pitch.

Caught in the middle of the pitch, Gaikwad had no chance of making it back in time and was run out. The mix-up was clearly Jaiswal’s fault, as he initially called for a run but then changed his mind, leaving Gaikwad stranded.

While the mix-up itself was disappointing, what truly caught the attention of many was Marcus Stoinis’ reaction. The Australian all-rounder responded to Jaiswal’s error with a mocking laugh, further adding to the batter’s embarrassment.

Gaikwad’s dismissal marked an unfortunate end to his innings, earning him the dubious distinction of becoming the third Indian batter to be dismissed for a diamond duck in T20Is. He joined the likes of Amit Mishra and Jasprit Bumrah, who achieved the feat in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

The mix-up also affected Jaiswal’s own innings, as he was dismissed in the very next over. After hitting a four and a six off Matthew Short, he fell on the third ball of the over, mistiming a shot and being caught inside the circle. Jaiswal’s attempt to loft the delivery over mid-off failed to gain sufficient elevation, allowing Steve Smith to take a clean catch in the circle. Despite his aggressive start, Jaiswal’s innings ended prematurely, leaving India with a shaky start to their chase.
