Legendary Indian batsman, Sachin Tendulkar reckons that the England pacer, James Anderson is the only pacer with teh capability of bowling a “reverse outswinger” with a wrist position of a conventional inswinger. During a chat with the Windies legend, Brian Lara on his ‘100MB’ app, Sachin explained why Anderson will be playing a crucial role for England in the ongoing Test against West Indies at the Ageas Bowl.
Talking to Lara, Sachin said, “With a reverse swing, Jimmy Anderson was possibly the first bowler who bowled reverse swing also reverse. “
In layman language, while bowling a conventional inswinger to a right-hander, the shiny part of the ball is kept on the outside and rough part on the inside. However, when it comes to reverse outswinger, the bowl mover away from the batsman but the shiny side of the bowl will still remain on the outward side.

Usually, the bowlers have different wrist positions on both occasions, but Sachin reckons that Anderson somehow manages to bowl the reverse outswinger with the wrist position of conventional inswinger, which is unheard of.
Explaining the same, Sachin said, “What I experienced, over a period of time, that he would hold the ball as if he was bowling outswinger, but the release point, he would try and bring the ball back in…..and number of batters would look at the wrist position, and what he has actually done, he’s shown you that he’s bowling inswing, but the imbalance between both sides of the ball would take the ball away from you.”
Tendulkar said that Anderson changes his wrist position quickly and because of that batsman has often seen getting committed to the shot in advance. Sachin explained that after seeing Anderson some bowlers like Stuart Broad have started using the same trick as well.

The batting legend elaborated, “Now a number of guys, you see their shine, and what they’re trying to do – I spotted even Stuart Broad trying to do that at some stage, but Anderson started this long time ago. So I rate him very very highly. One of the best exponents of reverse swing.”
