MS Dhoni, the legendary cricketer, is set to achieve a remarkable milestone as he gears up to play his 250th IPL match for the Chennai Super Kings in the final against the Gujarat Titans tonight in Ahmedabad. This significant feat adds another shining chapter to Dhoni’s illustrious career, solidifying his status as one of the greatest captains in the history of the game and arguably the finest in the IPL.
Throughout his journey, Dhoni has amassed an impressive collection of T20 titles, securing seven major championships. These include the inaugural T20 World Cup triumph in 2007, four IPL titles, and two Champions League T20 trophies. Tom Moody, the former Australian cricketer, considers Dhoni to be unequivocally the best T20 captain ever, as he disclosed his top choices for the most outstanding captains in the past five decades.
“In my view, MS Dhoni is hands down the best T20 captain we have ever seen. He has demonstrated this year after year. However, if we talk about Test cricket, I would not place MS Dhoni in that category,” expressed Tom Moody during an interview with ESPNcricinfo.
Sanjay Manjrekar, a former Indian cricketer and fellow participant in the discussion, echoed Moody’s sentiments, asserting that no one comes close to challenging Dhoni’s supremacy in the T20 format.
“Let’s not forget the impact Arjuna Ranatunga had on Sri Lanka. Steve Waugh was remarkable as a Test captain, and Kapil Dev in 50-over cricket. While others may have their achievements, when it comes to T20, no one can challenge MS Dhoni,” Sanjay Manjrekar emphasized.
Moody also commended the impressive leadership skills exhibited by England’s all-rounder Ben Stokes in Test cricket. Stokes assumed the captaincy from Joe Root last year following the West Indies tour.
“There are other potential candidates, as we have recently witnessed with Ben Stokes, who has made an enormous impact. Although it’s a relatively short period, the way he has transformed the game for England is quite remarkable,” stated Moody, acknowledging Stokes’ influence.
As Dhoni reaches this remarkable milestone and garners praise for his exceptional leadership, the cricketing world continues to recognize his immense contributions and indelible legacy in the sport.
