The question mark over India’s participation in the 2025 Champions Trophy, to be hosted by Pakistan, casts a shadow over the entire cricket discourse. The two neighboring nations have a pretty complex political history, and the last time India visited Pakistan was in 2008. With the PCB hell-bent on hosting the entire tournament in its own backyard, the onus lies with the Indian government to take a call.
The PCB, under the leadership of Mohsin Naqvi, adopted a diplomatic stance and was waiting for the ICC to make its decision. Another former Pakistan cricketer, Saqlain Mushtaq, said it would not make a huge difference if India didn’t play in the tournament. His focus soon turned to domestic issues miring Pakistan cricket. He expressed dismay over the recent performance of the team in the T20 World Cup, wondering for a reason behind frequent captaincy changes.
“We seem to have no vision,” Saqlain Mushtaq lamented. “We look at what’s going to happen tomorrow and appoint a captain, then change the team the next day.” He emphasized the need for a long-term plan, a system to identify and groom future leaders, rather than making impulsive decisions based on short-term gains.

He pointed out that this team was in serious need of long-term planning and leadership development. Hailing the opportunistic mode of selecting captains, he said a scientific procedure to identify and groom future leaders was necessary. According to Mushtaq, the choice of a potential captain should be based on various criteria—performance, display of leadership qualities, and vision.
“We seem to have a short-term mentality,” Saqlain Mushtaq criticized. “We appoint a captain without considering the long-term implications. There’s no clear vision or strategy for grooming future leaders.”
He lamented the fact that there was no systematic leadership development program within Pakistan cricket and hence the revolving door of captains. Consistent leadership, Mushtaq argued, is sine qua non for building a world-class team capable of success over a period of time.
Frank assessment of the former cricketer puts down in detail the leadership problems that have plagued Pakistan cricket. To become one of the global cricketing powerhouses, resolution of these issues would be indispensable for the boys as the nation gets ready for the future.

While the India-Pakistan cricket rivalry is something that continues to thrill fans globally, the situation on both sides of the border is much more complicated than it seems. While both countries continue to grapple with the problems of past and present, it is hard to say what the future holds for cricket between the two nations.
The immediate problems are those confronting Pakistan cricket. For a team to reach its potential, a stable and strong leadership structure is needed.
