Saransh Jain began his Test career on Sunday, August 23, when he made his debut for India in the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo. The 33-year-old all-rounder replaced left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who was unavailable due to a viral infection. India had already secured the two-match series after registering a convincing 165-run win in the opening Test at Galle.
Jain became the 320th cricketer to represent India in Test cricket. His debut was made even more special when senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja presented him with his Test cap. Jadeja also shared words of encouragement with the debutant, reminding him to enjoy the occasion rather than become overwhelmed by its significance.
For Saransh Jain, the moment represented much more than a professional milestone. His journey to the Indian Test team has been shaped by years of domestic cricket and the constant support of his family, particularly his father, Subodh. “First of all, I would like to thank God and after that my family. My father is the closest person to me, so I would tell him first. I started playing cricket because of him, and I will continue to play for him,” Jain was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

Jain’s father was diagnosed with mouth cancer in 2014, but despite the difficult circumstances, he continued to encourage his son to pursue his cricketing ambitions. That support became an important source of motivation as Jain worked his way through India’s domestic cricket structure.

The all-rounder developed into a consistent performer under coach Chandrakant Pandit and subsequently made his presence felt in domestic cricket, including the Ranji Trophy and India A assignments. His performances eventually earned him the opportunity to step onto the international stage. Receiving his debut cap from Jadeja made the occasion even more meaningful for Jain. The youngster acknowledged the value of learning from an experienced all-rounder who has established himself as one of India’s most successful players across formats.
“Jaddu bhai is a legend and if I am getting the cap from him, it will only benefit me. I am very happy. I wanted to get a cap from an all-rounder who will motivate me. I am an all-rounder myself, so I will try to fulfil my dream,” Saransh Jain added.

Jadeja also acknowledged the long journey Jain had undertaken to reach international cricket. His message was simple: the debutant should treat the Test match like another first-class game and trust the experience he had gained over the years.
“Test cap No. 320, Saransh, well done,” Ravindra Jadeja said. He then encouraged Jain to remain relaxed, reminding him that the Indian team was behind him. “Just like you have performed in so many domestic matches, play like you are playing another First-Class match. You have all the other 14 players with you to support you. Enjoy this moment instead of taking pressure,” Jadeja concluded.
