The 30-year-old Windies pacer Shannon Gabriel has been suspended for the second and final Test of the away series against the hosts Bangladesh after breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the first Test at Chittagong.

During the opening day (on Thursday) of the Chittagong Test, in the eighth over of the match, the right-arm pacer Gabriel made a physical contact with Bangladesh opening batsman Imrul Kayes when the opener was taking a short run. The on-field umpires Aleem Dar and Richard Illingworth have felt that it was an inappropriate and deliberate physical contact which could be avoidable by Gabriel.

Later, Gabriel was found guilty for this by the match referee David Boon as the pacer breached the Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel that relates to, “inappropriate physical contact with a player, player support personnel, umpire, match referee or any other person (including a spectator) during an international match.”

Due to this breach, Gabriel has received a 30 per cent fine and two demerit points. On Friday morning, Gabriel admitted his offence and also accepted the proposed sanctions, which mean that there was no need for a formal hearing.

With this new breach, Gabriel has a total of five demerit points within a 24-month period. Earlier in April 2017, Gabriel had received a 50 percent fine and three demerit points against Pakistan during the Jamaica Test.

As he has crossed the four demerit points, it has now been converted into two suspension points that lead a player to face a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whatever comes first.

In the Chittagong Test that Bangladesh won by 64 runs, Gabriel had a first innings bowling figure of 20-3-70-4 and the second innings bowling figure of 3-0-24-1. Due to the latest suspension, Gabriel will miss the second and final Test of the series that will be played at Mirpur from November 30.
