In a significant development for Rohit Sharma’s Team India, it appears that premier batsman Shreyas Iyer and pace sensation Jasprit Bumrah are on track to recover from their injuries in time for the upcoming Asia Cup. The Asia Cup 2023, hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, is scheduled to take place from August 31 to September 17.

The prestigious six-nation tournament was last won by co-hosts Sri Lanka. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has confirmed that the event will follow a hybrid model, with four matches being held in Pakistan and the remaining nine matches scheduled to be played in Sri Lanka. Team India faced an early exit from the previous edition of the Asia Cup due to the absence of speedster Jasprit Bumrah.

According to a report by ESPNCricinfo, it has been revealed that Bumrah has commenced light bowling workloads at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Although Bumrah has been primarily receiving physiotherapy at the NCA, he has not played for India since the home T20I series against Australia last year.

The Indian fast bowler underwent back surgery in New Zealand before the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. Bumrah had missed both the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup in Australia last year due to a recurring back injury.

He has been undergoing extensive rehabilitation to address the stress reaction in his lower back. As a result of his ongoing recovery, he was not included in India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2022.

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer has also been sidelined with a back injury. Iyer underwent back surgery after missing the 2023 edition of the IPL. He experienced discomfort and did not bat in the Ahmedabad Test against Australia, subsequently being ruled out due to a back injury. The report indicates that the medical staff at the NCA is confident about both Iyer and Bumrah making their comebacks during the Asia Cup in September.
