Shreyas Iyer Clarifies His Earlier Comments On Ganguly And Ponting

Delhi Capitals skipper, Shreyas Iyer went on to clarify his comments on head coach Ricky Ponting and former mentor Sourav Ganguly of his franchise which he made before his team’s first match against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) on Sunday. During the toss, Iyer had praised Ponting and Ganguly for contributing to his growth as a captain which confused the fans and pundits as the former India stalwart is no longer associated with DC due to the conflict of interest issue.

Ganguly served as the mentor of DC in the 2019 season in which Iyer led the franchise for the time to the playoffs in 6 years. It was the first full season for Iyer as the team captain. During teh toss, Shreyas had said, “I have learned to take some responsibility, with the likes of Ponting and Ganguly, it makes my task a bit easier.”

But he issued a clarification on Twitter, saying that he was merely emphasizing his “gratitude” towards the two legends. He wrote: “As a young captain, I am thankful to Ricky and Dada for being a part of my journey as a cricketer and captain last season. My comment yesterday was to emphasise my gratitude towards the role they both have played in my personal growth as a captain.”

Delhi Capitals opened their IPL 2020 campaign with a Super Over win against Kings XI Punjab (KXI) in Dubai. The match saw both teams tied on 157 for 8 in their respective quota of 20 overs after which DC restricted KXIP to 2 for 2 in the Super Over.

DC knocked off the target in 2 deliveries to go second on the points table but later dropped to third after Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) registering a 10-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Monday.

Delhi will next play against MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 7th match of IPL 2020 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 25.
