Prithvi Shaw and Yashasvi Jaiswal, two of Mumbai’s brightest cricketing talents in recent years, have experienced vastly different trajectories in their India careers. Shaw made an explosive entry into Test cricket, scoring a century on debut, but his career soon faced a series of setbacks. In contrast, Jaiswal’s rise has been nothing short of meteoric, with the left-handed opener piling on runs consistently and making a name for himself in domestic cricket.
Shaw’s career has been marred by inconsistency, fitness issues, and disciplinary concerns. Recently, he was dropped from Mumbai’s Vijay Hazare Trophy squad due to similar problems, further raising concerns about the direction his career is heading.
Despite these challenges, India’s Shreyas Iyer has been a strong advocate for Shaw, urging him to focus on his work ethic to get back on track. Iyer, who has seen Shaw’s talent firsthand, believes the 25-year-old has the potential to rediscover his form.

“Both Shaw and Jaiswal are exceptionally talented players,” Shreyas Iyer said in an interview with The Indian Express. “The way they time the ball, it’s pleasing to watch. Prithvi Shaw started off brilliantly, and he has the incredible ability to time the ball and score runs quickly. All of us in the team feel he’s blessed with phenomenal talent. He just needs to focus on his work ethic, and everything else will follow. He’s God-gifted.”
Since his India debut in 2018, Shaw has played five Tests, six ODIs, and one T20I, amassing a total of 528 runs, including a century and two fifties. On the other hand, Jaiswal, who made his debut earlier in 2013, has since played 19 Tests and 23 T20Is, scoring a combined total of 2,521 runs. Jaiswal’s consistency and mental toughness have earned him the respect of his peers.

Shreyas Iyer further praised Jaiswal for his strong character, saying, “Yashasvi Jaiswal knows exactly what he’s doing and understands his current standing. He doesn’t need anyone’s advice. He has a strong personality, believes in himself, and is incredibly competitive. He just needs to keep focusing on his game, and the sky’s the limit for him.”
Both players, though on different paths, represent the future of Indian cricket, and it will be fascinating to see how their careers unfold in the coming years.
