India sealed the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan with a convincing seven-wicket victory in the second match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on September 15. The win gave the Men in Blue an unassailable 2-0 lead and turned the third T20I, scheduled for September 17 at the same venue, into a dead rubber.

With the series already decided, India captain Shreyas Iyer has hinted that the team could make changes for the final game. One player who could benefit from the rotation is young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has remained on the sidelines during the first two matches.

Sooryavanshi was retained in India’s squad for the Afghanistan series after making his T20I debut against England in July 2026. However, he has yet to feature in Delhi, with the team opting for experience at the top of the order, including Sanju Samson. Samson repaid that faith in the second T20I with a spectacular knock, smashing 57 runs from just 22 balls. His innings provided a much-needed boost after he had featured in both games of the series.

Speaking after India’s second consecutive win, Shreyas Iyer indicated that the players who have not received an opportunity could be given a chance in the final T20I. “Definitely, we want all of them to get used to the wicket and get some practice, so it will be a good opportunity to give a chance to the guys sitting out.” 

The captain’s comments could pave the way for Sooryavanshi to make his first appearance of the series. With nothing at stake in terms of the series result, the third T20I gives India an opportunity to assess their bench strength while providing valuable match practice.

Iyer was also pleased with the manner of India’s second victory. After the team’s performance in the opening match, he wanted a more comprehensive display from his players.

“Looking at the last match and coming into this one, we were demanding a comprehensive win and today was a good one.” The final T20I could therefore offer India a chance to experiment while giving fringe players valuable exposure ahead of future international assignments.
