Team India skipper Shubman Gill and young pacer Gurnoor Brar shared a tense but ultimately harmless collision while attempting a catch during the first ODI against England in Birmingham. The moment briefly shocked everyone at Edgbaston, but the ball was safely held, and India kept control of the contest.

The incident took place on the first ball of the 16th over, when Prasidh Krishna struck England captain Jos Buttler. The batter tried to work the ball through the leg side, but it took a thick edge and ballooned into the air. With no clear call heard, Brar charged in from mid-on while Gill moved aggressively from mid-off, leading to a shoulder-on-shoulder collision as both players went for the same catch.
Despite the contact, Brar stayed alert and completed the catch, while Gill ended up on the ground after the impact. Brar then reacted with a light-hearted gesture toward his captain, turning a potentially worrying moment into a brief comic scene. Buttler, meanwhile, had to walk back for just 5 runs, giving India another important wicket in the middle overs.

The clash could have been dangerous, as such mid-air collisions often lead to injuries, but India escaped without any serious setback. Given Gill’s importance as captain, the men in blue would have been relieved that the incident did not cause any damage.
Virat Kohli, fielding nearby, was seen laughing at the moment and celebrating with Prasidh Krishna after the wicket. Kohli, who has looked sharp in the field throughout the match, also pulled off a few sharp stops in the cover region to prevent boundaries. The former India captain has returned to action after missing the Afghanistan series due to a hamstring injury sustained during the IPL 2026 final. He had earlier been in excellent ODI form against South Africa and New Zealand.

Earlier in the game, England captain Harry Brook won the toss and chose to bat first. Openers Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell started cautiously against Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna before accelerating against Brar during the latter part of the powerplay. However, the young left-arm quick had the final say, removing both openers in the same over.
Bethell was the first to go, dismissed for 14 off 31 balls, before Duckett departed for 43, ending England’s promising start. From there, Gill responded with sharp bowling changes and aggressive field placements, keeping constant pressure on the English batters.

India quickly seized control as England lost five wickets for just 19 runs. With Joe Root now trying to rebuild alongside Liam Dawson, the hosts will need a steady partnership to recover. India, on the other hand, will look to maintain the squeeze and push for a strong start in the three-match ODI series.
