Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill opened up about the tense moments he experienced with the umpires during the clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2025. The young skipper admitted that emotions often run high in high-stakes matches, and such heated exchanges are a natural part of the game when players are giving it their all.

Gujarat Titans clinched a commanding 38-run victory over SRH in Match 51 of the tournament at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 2. With that win, GT surged to second place on the points table, collecting 14 points from 10 games. On the other hand, SRH slipped further, suffering their seventh defeat in as many matches.
The spotlight, however, was on Gill—not just for his brilliant batting—but for his animated confrontations with the umpires. The first incident came in the 14th over when GT reviewed a leg-before appeal against Abhishek Sharma. Though the ball struck the toe, ball-tracking returned an “umpire’s call,” and the review was lost. Gill could be seen visibly upset while discussing the decision with on-field umpires Kannur Swaroopanand and Virender Sharma.

Later, after being controversially run out, Gill was once again seen having words with the fourth umpire as replay footage left room for doubt. Despite the drama, Gill delivered a captain’s knock—hammering 76 off just 38 balls, laced with 10 fours and 2 sixes. It marked his third straight half-century and fifth in the last seven innings, taking his tally to 465 runs in 10 matches at an average of 51.66 and a blazing strike rate of 162.02.

Addressing the incident in the post-match presentation, Shubman Gill said, “Sometimes, when you’re giving your 110 percent on the field, the emotions get the better of you. That’s part of the game.”
Shubman Gill also praised his team’s batting approach, particularly on slower, black soil wickets in Ahmedabad. He noted that Gujarat’s focus was never about avoiding dot balls, but about adapting and maintaining a steady flow of runs.

“We didn’t plan for just 22 dot balls. The idea was to keep playing our natural game. On these pitches, hitting sixes isn’t always easy, but our top order knows how to keep things moving,” he said.
Gill and Sai Sudharsan stitched a blazing 87-run opening stand, while Jos Buttler’s quickfire 64 helped GT post a daunting 224/6. Gujarat now travel to face Mumbai Indians on May 6 in what promises to be another crucial encounter.
