Young Indian opener, Shubman Gill asserts that he witnessed a bittersweet experience in the 3rd ODI against the West Indies as he missed out on his maiden ODI century by just 2 runs but his contribution of 98 not out turned out to be a match-winning effort for the hosts. He managed to do enough to keep himself in the mix in the ODI set-up even when the big names will be making a comeback in the ODIs as he amassed 205 runs, including 2 fifties, at a healthy strike rate of over 100 in the 3-match ODI series.

On Wednesday, Shubman Gill flaunted his incredible shot-making ability as he hit a run-a-ball 98 but rain in Port of Spain ruined his chances of scoring his first ODI century.  Gill was 98 off 98 at the end of the 36th over when the heavens opened up for the second time as India’s innings came to an end at 225 for 3. He even had decent knocks in the first couple of ODIs, but on Wednesday, he put his head down and toyed around with the West Indies bowling attack.

After receiving the players of the series award, Shubman Gill said, “It was bittersweet, I was expecting to get 100. It was not under my control as it rained, but I was happy with my innings. I was disappointed with how I got out in the first two matches, I tried to rotate strike.”

Shubman Gill said he wanted just an over before the rain break to score a century for the first time and pointed out that him and Shreyas Iyer came out all guns blazing after the first rain break. India was standing at 115 for 1 in 24 overs when there was the first stoppage but once the play resumed, the visitors suddenly upped the ante, smashing 110 runs in the next 12 overs.

The young opener elaborated, “After the rain break, we let our instincts take over. I just wanted one more over when we walked out before the last break. The wickets were good.”

Along with stand-in skipper, Shikhar Dhawan, Shubman Gill added 113 runs. The latter also added a quickfire 86-run stand with Shreyas Iyer who played positively after the first rain break for his 34-ball 44.

India rode on Mohammed Siraj’s early strikes and Yuzvendra Chahal’s 4-wicket haul to bowl West Indies out for 137 and seal their first-ever ODI series clean sweep in the West Indies. Shardul Thakur also took crucial wickets in the middle overs. India and West Indies will play a 5-match T20I series from Friday, July 29, but Gill will not be taking part in that series.
