Shubman Gill produced a stunning moment in the field when India desperately needed a breakthrough during the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo. The India captain completed an outstanding catch to dismiss Kamindu Mendis and end a crucial partnership that had threatened to put the hosts in a commanding position. The dismissal came shortly after Mendis and Pasindu Sooriyabandara had added 100 runs for Sri Lanka in their second innings.
The partnership had helped the hosts recover after India made early inroads, putting pressure back on the visitors. Prasidh Krishna eventually provided the breakthrough with a well-directed short delivery. Mendis had handled several short-pitched balls confidently earlier in his innings, even collecting a boundary and a six. However, he attempted to take on another delivery and failed to make proper contact.
The left-hander tried to pull the ball across the line, but the shot did not come off the middle of the bat. Instead, the ball went high towards the square-leg region, giving Gill an opportunity to showcase his athleticism.

The India captain immediately tracked the ball and covered considerable ground. Despite having to adjust his movement under pressure, Gill kept his eyes firmly on the ball before completing a superb diving catch.
Mendis walked back after scoring 55 runs from 92 deliveries, ending an important contribution for Sri Lanka. The wicket was particularly valuable for India because the hosts had begun to build serious momentum through the partnership with Sooriyabandara.

India had enforced the follow-on after dismissing Sri Lanka for 290 in their first innings, having posted 503/9 declared. The visitors appeared to be in complete control after Sri Lanka lost two early wickets in their second innings.
However, the hosts responded strongly, with Mendis and Sooriyabandara putting together a century partnership to revive their hopes of avoiding an innings defeat. Their resistance meant India had to work considerably harder for the remaining wickets. Gill’s brilliant catch therefore arrived at a crucial stage of the contest and gave India renewed momentum. The dismissal also highlighted the importance of sharp fielding in a Test match where the hosts were fighting to stay alive.

Sri Lanka continued to battle hard and were closing in on India’s first-innings total of 503. If the hosts managed to build a lead of more than 200 runs, India could face a difficult fourth-innings chase, particularly with the pitch expected to become more challenging on Day 5. For Sri Lanka, a victory is essential to level the two-match series after India won the opening Test by 165 runs in Galle. India, meanwhile, will be determined to complete a 2-0 series sweep and strengthen their position in the World Test Championship race.
