Shubman Gill etched his name in the history books on Thursday with a sublime double century during the second Test against England at Edgbaston. Displaying remarkable poise and patience, the young Indian skipper brought up his maiden Test double hundred off 311 balls, becoming only the second Indian captain to achieve this feat in an overseas Test, after Virat Kohli’s 200 at North Sound in 2016.

What makes Gill’s knock even more special is that he became the first Asian captain to score a double hundred in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia), surpassing the previous best of 193 by Sri Lanka’s Tillakaratne Dilshan at Lord’s in 2011. At 25 years and 298 days, he is also the second youngest Indian captain to notch up a double ton, following in the footsteps of the legendary MAK Pataudi, who achieved the milestone at just 23.

Gill’s innings not only put India in command but also saw him enter an elite club of Indian greats. With his score of 222, he surpassed Rahul Dravid’s 217 (2002) and Sunil Gavaskar’s 221 (1979)* to register the highest individual Test score by an Indian in England.

He brought up the milestone in classic style, pulling Josh Tongue towards deep fine leg for a single. Gill’s knock, studded with 21 boundaries and two sixes, is now counted among the finest Test knocks by an Indian overseas.

He now joins a prestigious list of Indian captains with double centuries that includes names like Gavaskar, Tendulkar, Dhoni, Pataudi, and Kohli—with Kohli still leading the list with seven double hundreds as captain.

Gill’s masterclass has also surpassed Mohammed Azharuddin’s 192 in Auckland (1990) and 179 in Manchester (1990), both of which were previously the highest by an Indian skipper in SENA and England respectively.

A new chapter in Indian cricket has been written—and Shubman Gill’s name is on top of it.
