When cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar retired, the world wondered who would fill his shoes, and Sachin Tendulkar stepped up to dominate the sport. As Tendulkar’s illustrious career nears its end, another successor has arrived on the scene – Virat Kohli. While Kohli is still going strong, a new heir-apparent has emerged. In the presence of the legendary Sachin, Shubman Gill showcased his talent by smashing his third century in IPL 2023.

Despite the heartbreaks suffered by the veteran stars, there was a collective smile and admiration for the young Gill, who is ready to take the world of cricket by storm. This has undeniably been Gill’s year. He entered this year’s IPL with an impressive track record, including a maiden T20I century in January, a Test hundred against Australia in February, and a record-breaking double century in ODIs.

The 23-year-old continued his sublime form in IPL 2023, scoring his maiden century at his beloved Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. He followed it up with another century against the Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Chinnaswamy Stadium and notched up his third century in just four innings during Qualifier 2 against the Mumbai Indians, achieving several remarkable milestones along the way.

Gill’s knock of 129 off just 60 balls now stands as the highest individual score ever recorded in the IPL playoffs. His impressive tally of 851 runs this season makes him the second Indian batsman, after Kohli, to score 800 or more runs in a single season. Overall, Gill’s run tally places him third on the all-time list.

After the game against the Mumbai Indians, where Gill was rightfully awarded the Player of the Match for his record-breaking innings, he engaged in an intense conversation with mentor Sachin Tendulkar, a moment that instantly went viral on social media.

In the post-match presentation, Gill shared his thoughts, saying, “For me, it is about playing ball to ball, over to over. The over where I hit three sixes gave me the momentum to go big. That’s when I realized it could be my day. It was also a good wicket to bat on.”
