Head coach Shukri Conrad didn’t hold back after the South Africa team suffered a crushing defeat against the New Zealand national cricket team in the semifinal of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Reflecting on the loss, Conrad dismissed the idea that South Africa had “choked,” instead describing the result as a comprehensive thrashing delivered by a relentless New Zealand side.

The Black Caps produced a dominant performance, powered by a historic innings from Finn Allen, who smashed the fastest century in T20 World Cup history. The explosive opener hammered an unbeaten 100 off just 33 balls, dismantling South Africa’s bowling attack with a fearless display of power-hitting. His innings featured 10 boundaries and eight towering sixes, guiding New Zealand to a nine-wicket victory while chasing 170 with more than seven overs to spare.

Allen’s stunning knock thrilled the Kolkata crowd, especially considering he is set to represent the Kolkata Knight Riders in the upcoming Indian Premier League season. For South Africa, however, the night quickly turned into a frustrating contest as they struggled to match New Zealand’s intensity and execution.

“I don’t know if tonight was a choke. I thought it was a bloody walloping. I think for you to choke, you must have had a sniff in the game. We did not have a sniff,” Sukhri Conrad said after the match.

The South African coach even used a colourful Afrikaans expression to describe the magnitude of the defeat. “In South Africa, we say we got moered snotklap,” he explained, referring to a phrase that roughly translates to receiving a heavy beating.

Earlier in the evening, South Africa were asked to bat first on a surface that appeared favourable for chasing. The innings never truly gained momentum as New Zealand’s disciplined bowling attack struck regularly during the powerplay and middle overs. Key wickets at crucial moments left the Proteas struggling to build partnerships.

Openers Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton were among the early casualties, both falling to off-spinner Cole McConchie. At one stage, South Africa were reeling at 77/5 shortly after the halfway mark, a collapse that effectively derailed their innings. Captain Aiden Markram later admitted the defeat felt like a heavy blow, reflecting the team’s disappointment after failing to find rhythm with the bat.

“They strangled us up front, we lost wickets and we did not get any sort of momentum going,” Sukhri Conrad said while praising New Zealand’s clinical performance. Ultimately, the semifinal served as a reminder of how ruthless knockout cricket can be. On a night when New Zealand executed their plans to perfection, South Africa simply had no answer.
