In an intriguing revelation, it has been disclosed that MS Dhoni was not the initial choice for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the inaugural IPL auction. The former BCCI chief and owner of CSK, N Srinivasan, had initially favoured Virender Sehwag for the team but was eventually convinced by the late cricketer VB Chandrasekhar to opt for Dhoni.
Recalling the pre-auction discussions, VBChandrasekhar revealed, “Before the auctions in 2008, Mr. N Srinivasan asked me, ‘Who are you going to pick?’ I said Dhoni. He asked, ‘Why not Virender Sehwag?’ I said Sehwag would not provide me with the kind of inspiration that the crowd will be looking forward to, whereas Dhoni is a captain, a wicket-keeper, and a batsman who can change the match situation on his own. “

He added, “So I asked him if I could look for him. He said, ‘I would rather have Sehwag.’ But the next day morning, he came and said, ‘Go and get Dhoni.'”
Dhoni’s impact on CSK was immediate as he led the team to the final in the inaugural season of 2008. Over the years, he developed a strong connection with the fans in Tamil Nadu, making Chennai his second home. Despite the team’s suspension for two years due to betting charges, Dhoni’s loyalty to CSK remained evident.

Expressing his deep bond with the franchise and its fans, Dhoni showcased his love for CSK through an Instagram post before the 2018 season. Under Dhoni’s captaincy, CSK has achieved remarkable success, securing the IPL title five times – in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023.
