Jonny Bairstow believes Steve Smith’s wicket will be the key in the ongoing third Ashes Test match at Perth, where Australian skipper left the field unbeaten at 92.
England managed 403 in their first innings with help of centuries from Dawid Malan and Bairstow. They were in very commanding position on day 2, but their lower order collapsed horribly from 368/4 to 403 all out.
Talking about the match situation, Bairstow quoted “We have the capabilities of taking five or six wickets in a session, we have shown that previously and there is no reason we can’t now. Our boys have got the skills to get 20 wickets in this Test match. Tomorrow when we come to bowl in the morning is a huge session for us.”
“We need to try and keep the Aussies behind us for as long as possible if we can nip some wickets and get the bowlers in and our guys are still fresh … and we’ve got the new ball as well,” he added.
England stumper scored his fourth Test ton in Perth and silence his critics. “The hundred in many ways was my favorite one, it meant a huge amount,” said Bairstow.
“I have played in a few Ashes series now — to score an Ashes hundred is something you dream about as a kid. It has eluded me until now and it was a whole heap of emotions that came running through.”
England’s chances to retain the Ashes are quite bleak. The weather forecast is not very pleasing for the last two days and it predicted a heavy downpour on Sunday and Monday. Australia is already 2-0 ahead in the series and are in line to regain the urn in their homeland.
Australia ended day two at 203/3 with Smith is batting flawlessly since his arrival at the crease and Shaun Marsh is partnering him on the other end.
