Delhi Capitals (DC) played their opening game for the Indian Premier League (IPL) on September 20 as they locked horns with Kings XI Punjab (KXIP). The 2nd game of IPL 2020 ended in a super over and Shreyas Iyer’s Delhi Capitals won the tied game without much effort but what got the most attention from the game was not the tied scores but Iyer’s comments, on Sourav Ganguly, during the toss.

Iyer joined in KXIP skipper, KL Rahul at the toss, and the latter asked DC to bat first after winning the toss. Shreyas then came up to say his bit and credited head coach Ricky Ponting and DC’s IPL 2019 mentor Sourav Ganguly for helping him in his captaincy journey.

That comment has given a rise to a lot of criticism and people questioned Ganguly’s role in DC. They implied Sourav Ganguly’s association with DC as a conflict of interest case since Ganguly is also serving as the BCCI President. However, the former Indian skipper has come hard and said that he is a veteran cricketer who can speak to any young player he wants.

During a promotional event, Ganguly was heard saying, “I helped him (Iyer) last year. I may be the Board president, but don’t forget that I’ve played 500 matches (424 matches) for India, so I can speak to a young player and help him, be it, Shreyas Iyer or Virat Kohli. If they want help, I can.”

Shreyas Iyer, at the toss against KXIP, had credited Dada and Ponting for helping him a lot to grow as a captain.

Iyer elaborated, “As a young captain, I am thankful to Ricky and Dada for being a part of my journey as a cricketer and captain last season. My comment …… was to emphasize my gratitude towards the role they both have played in my personal growth as a captain.”
