After the ICC World Cup 2019 ending on a sad note for Men in Blue, there have been strong discussions going on between the former Indian cricketers that Team India should opt for a split captaincy model. And, now the BCCI president, Sourav Ganguly has expressed his thoughts on the same.

The current international cricket deals with three formats and if split captaincy has preferred,  different skippers can be assigned in order to lead the teams of the respective cricket formats. The current England side has Joe Root as their Test skipper, whereas Eoin Morgan dons captaincy in ODIs and T20Is. Even Australia also follows the same policy with Aaron Finch being given the limited-overs skipper while Tim Paine leads in Tests.

In an interview given to Hindustan Times, Ganguly said that there are split opinions on the split captaincy topic. Accepting that Rohit Shamr has immense experience of leading Mumbai Indians in IPL and also the Indian team in the absence of the regular skipper Virat Kohli, Ganguly not in favor of going for a split captaincy.

Dada said, “It has often been wondered whether Rohit Sharma’s experience of leading the Mumbai Indians in the IPL and also the national side in the absence of Kohli is enough for him to be made the white-ball captain. I don’t think that is required to be even discussed now.”

Statistically, Rohit has a better winning percentage as a skipper than Kohli in T20Is, but his sample size is also less as compared to Kohli. For now, one can confidently say that Kohli will be leading the team in the upcoming T20 World Cup which is scheduled to take place in Australia next year.

Team India is currently locking horns with Bangladesh for a three-match T20I series, without the services of Virat, who opted to take some rest. Under the captaincy of Rohit, the Indian team has already lost the first T20I and conceded a 1-0 lead to the visitors. The next match will be played at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot on the 7th of November.
