Former India captain Sourav Ganguly expressed his disappointment over India’s performance in the final of the 2023 World Test Championship against Australia. Australia emerged victorious by 209 runs at the Kennington Oval in London. Ganguly believed that it was an anti-climactic finish for India and felt that the expectations were too high on the team, especially on Day 5 of the WTC Final.
Reflecting on India’s batting collapse on the final day, Sourav Ganguly stated, “Anti-climax for sure but we were expecting too much on Day 5. 280 runs are a lot when you have only three batters left – Kohli, Jadeja, and Rahane. The fifth day’s cricket is different in these countries. It becomes double-paced, whether it is England or Australia. That is probably why such runs have not been scored for the last 100 years.”

Ganguly believed that India should have put up a stronger fight against Australia in the final. He even raised the issue with India’s head coach, Rahul Dravid. This loss marked India’s second consecutive defeat in the World Test Championship finals, having lost to New Zealand in 2021.
Acknowledging the low batting averages of India’s top order, Ganguly emphasized the importance of scoring runs at the international level. None of India’s top four batsmen managed to score a half-century in either innings of the WTC Final. Ganguly stressed that consistent run-scoring is crucial for winning major tournaments.
