The BCCI President, Sourav Ganguly reckons that international cricket will suffer a huge loss if the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 gets canceled once again due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The 7th edition of the T20 World was originally scheduled to take place in Australia in the month of October and November 2020.

However, last year, ICC had decided to postpone that quadrennial event due to the alarming Covid situation around the world. The ICC announced that the 2020 edition of the World Cup will now be taking place in Australia in 2022 while India will host the event in 2021. India was all set to host the T20 World Cup at home and the BCCI had even zeroed in on the potential venues to host the much-awaited event.

However, with the second wave of Covid-19 wrecking havoc in India, BCCI decided to shift the tournament to the United Arab Emirates and Oman. The BCCI recently confirmed to the ICC that it can shift the tournament to UAE and Oman. The Indian cricket governing body will continue to host the event.

The tournament is now scheduled to be commencing on October 17 and the final will be taking place on November 14 and while the chances of it getting canceled due to Covid are minimal, one cannot predict anything given the number of different Corona variants that are emerging in various countries.

Talking about the T20 World on his 49th birthday, Sourav Ganguly said, “Nothing can be done with this Covid-19 situation, so it is closed doors only. Cricket is obviously started, India is in England, then we will have IPL and then there is T20 World Cup. Cricket won’t stop and it will go on.”

He further added, “These are exceptional circumstances. Last year’s World Cup got canceled. This year if again it gets canceled because of Covid, then it is a massive loss for the game. That is why it is being taken to a safer place.”
