Sourav Ganguly is set for a new challenge with Delhi Capitals after being appointed the franchise’s head coach for IPL 2027. The former India captain believes DC have a strong squad and is determined to help the team rediscover the level they reached during the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Ganguly’s appointment also marks a homecoming. His association with Delhi Capitals began in 2019 when he joined the franchise as an advisor.

Since then, he has taken up several important roles within the setup, including Director of Cricket for both the men’s and women’s teams. Delhi Capitals finished sixth in the previous IPL season, and Ganguly has made it clear that reaching the playoffs will be one of his immediate priorities. The franchise has reached the IPL final only once, finishing runners-up in 2020.
Speaking on the Delhi Capitals YouTube channel, Sourav Ganguly highlighted the quality available in the squad, naming several experienced and exciting players. “It is a good team with KL Rahul, Axar Patel, Rishabh Pant, Mitchell Starc, Lungi Ngidi, David Miller, Tristan Stubbs; it is a pretty strong team and I hope we play to our potential,” Ganguly said.

The former India cricketer also reflected on his earlier involvement in building the Delhi squad and admitted that taking the team back to those successful years remains a major motivation.

“In 2019 and 2020, Delhi was a very good team. I was involved in building the team, but then I left and became BCCI president,” Sourav Ganguly explained. Ganguly believes there is enough talent in the current dressing room to compete at the highest level, but the players need to express themselves with confidence.
He also acknowledged that Delhi Capitals have struggled to consistently challenge for the IPL title in recent seasons. His aim will be to change that and give the franchise’s owners and supporters a team capable of competing deep into the tournament.

“I think it is time that the Delhi boys give them (the owners) that chance to rejoice with the squad where they have put in so much time and energy for the years to come,” Sourav Ganguly said. With IPL 2027 approaching, Ganguly will now look to combine his experience with the talent in the DC squad and build a team capable of finally going all the way.
