Virat Kohli’s quest for a defining knock in the IPL 2025 final came to a frustrating end on Tuesday, June 3, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, as the Royal Challengers Bengaluru stalwart was dismissed for 43 runs. In a high-pressure match against Punjab Kings, Kohli appeared poised for something special, but couldn’t carry on to the big score RCB needed.

Opening with Phil Salt, Kohli began with confidence as Salt went on the attack early, smashing a four and a six off Arshdeep Singh in the very first over. But the momentum took a hit when Kyle Jamieson removed Salt in the next over. Kohli then forged a steady partnership with Mayank Agarwal, helping RCB cross the 50-run mark before Agarwal fell to Yuzvendra Chahal for 24.

Rajat Patidar joined Kohli, and the pair added 40 important runs for the third wicket. Just as RCB looked to accelerate, Jamieson struck again to remove Patidar for 26, putting more pressure on Kohli to anchor the innings.

However, Kohli’s knock was cut short in the 15th over. Facing Azmatullah Omarzai, he attempted a pull shot off a rising delivery but ended up top-edging it. The ball looked set to fall safely, but Omarzai sprinted in and pulled off a stunning diving catch to dismiss the RCB talisman. The camera cut to Anushka Sharma in the crowd, who looked stunned as Kohli walked back after a composed 43 off 35 balls.

At the time of his dismissal, RCB were 131/4 in 14 overs. Despite the promising platform, the middle and lower order couldn’t fully capitalise. RCB eventually finished on 190/9 — a competitive total, but perhaps short of what they might have envisioned after a solid top-order start.
