Umesh Yadav has been in and out from the limited-overs squad of Team India. Yadav only gets a chance whenever either of Bhuvneshwar Kumar or Jasprit Bumrah is given rest. However, he is a regular member of the Test team but his presence in the playing XI always depends on other bowlers’ performance. Sunil Gavaskar put his views on him after the first T20I against Australia.

The former Indian skipper believes Umesh Yadav is not convincing when it comes to white-ball cricket. Gavaskar expressed his views after a poor outing during the first T20 International against Australia at Vizag.

Having kept themselves alive in the low-scoring contest after posting 126/7, India lost the match in the final over, bowled by Umesh who failed to defend 14 runs. Pat Cummins scored six runs off last two deliveries. It was not the first time when Umesh conceded a match. During Vizag ODI against West Indies last year, he couldn’t defend five runs off the last ball and gave a boundary to tie the match.

Gavaskar feels Yadav should be dropped from the final T20I, which is scheduled to be played in Bengaluru on Wednesday. “Umesh Yadav, despite being around for such a long time, is not convincing as a white-ball bowler, so India could well do with a replacement for him,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for The Times of India.

“The first thing that every team must realise especially in the ultra- short format of the game is never to underestimate any opponent. India may have just done that at Vizag as they went in with just three recognised batsmen with the likes of [Rishabh] Pant, [MS] Dhoni, [Dinesh] Karthik and [Krunal] Pandya to push the score along.”

Amidst, he mentioned few positives from the defeat and wrote: “The plus point for India is [KL] Rahul’s return to form and [Mayank] Markande showing good temperament under pressure.”

He added, “The fielding though with two wicketkeepers in the outfield meant that the extra run was always on for the Australians. India would do well to bring [Shikhar] Dhawan back and have Rahul at No.4.”
