India captain Suryakumar Yadav’s lean run in T20 internationals continued on Sunday as he once again failed to convert his start during the third T20I against South Africa in Dharamsala. Although India registered a comfortable seven-wicket victory, Suryakumar’s dismissal for 12 brought his prolonged struggle with the bat back into sharp focus, sparking debate among fans and former cricketers alike.

Suryakumar’s innings ended while attempting one of his trademark shots. Facing Lungi Ngidi, the right-hander tried to execute his familiar pick-up shot over fine leg but failed to get the required elevation. The ball went straight into the hands of Ottneil Baartman inside the boundary, ending another brief stay at the crease.

Given Suryakumar’s stature and expectations, the dismissal drew immediate criticism, particularly regarding his shot selection during a period of low confidence. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar did not hold back during commentary, urging Suryakumar to reassess his approach. Gavaskar acknowledged the pick-up shot as one that has served the batter well over the years, but felt the timing was no longer right.

“It has been a very productive shot for him,” Sunil Gavaskar said. “But when you’re not in form, it’s going up in the air instead of going the distance. Maybe he should keep that shot in cold storage until he starts getting going.” He further added that India cannot afford its T20I captain contributing only 12 runs regularly.

Statistically, the concern is growing. Suryakumar’s run of low scores has now stretched across 21 innings, with only two notable exceptions: a fluent 75 against Bangladesh in Hyderabad last October and an unbeaten 47 versus Pakistan in the Asia Cup. Despite the numbers, the skipper remains confident in his process.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Suryakumar admitted he is short of runs but rejected suggestions of being out of form. “I’ve been batting beautifully in the nets,” he said. “When the runs have to come, they will come. I’m not out of form, just out of runs.”
