Chennai Super Kings stalwart Suresh Raina has opened up about the time he convinced captain MS Dhoni to drop him from the playing XI during IPL 2021 in favor of Robin Uthappa. Raina’s suggestion proved to be a game-changer as CSK went on to clinch their fourth IPL title by defeating Kolkata Knight Riders in the final.
In a conversation with Uthappa on JioCinema, Raina recounted how his recommendation worked wonders for the team. He revealed that he discussed the idea with Dhoni and received permission to include Uthappa in the team for the remaining two league matches.
“I suggested to MS Dhoni that ‘you should try Robin Uthappa.’ He sought my permission to play you and I told him that ‘he’s the guy who will give you the final, trust me’,” Suresh Raina shared during the conversation.

However, Raina acknowledged that Dhoni initially hesitated to drop him from the CSK lineup. But Dhoni’s focus was on winning the season, and Raina believed Uthappa’s inclusion would be crucial for their success.
“MS Dhoni said, ‘We have played together since 2008, but I want to win this season. Now, you tell me what to do.’ I said, ‘Play Robin at number 3 and make sure he is in the playing XI till the final. If you win, CSK will win. Whether I play or him, Robin and Raina are the same’,” Suresh Raina explained.
Raina’s sacrifice turned out to be a masterstroke for CSK’s campaign. However, it came at the cost of his own IPL career. Since playing against Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2021 before being dropped from the playing XI, the left-handed batsman has not featured in the T20 league.

Raina’s selfless decision to prioritize the team’s success over personal achievements exemplifies his dedication and team spirit. It highlights the strong bond between Raina and Dhoni, who have been integral figures in CSK’s success over the years. Despite his absence from the IPL, Raina’s contribution and impact on the team’s triumph will always be remembered by CSK and their fans.
