India’s T20I captain confirmed his availability for the upcoming Buchi Babu Invitational multi-day cricket tournament, where he will be playing for Mumbai in the match. The national team’s T20 captain will be available for Mumbai CA XI’s second game against the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association XI in Coimbatore from August 27-30.

While effective with the bat in the shorter formats, Suryakumar Yadav wants to prove to everyone his adaptability and eagerness to contribute in every format of the game. That is in keeping with the commitment that he’s always held for domestic cricket. Suryakumar stepped in as player for the Mumbai side while test specialist Sarfaraz Khan was named as its captain. He is keen on ensuring that Khan concentrates solely on his game.

Suryakumar will step in to play the second match for Mumbai,” an MCA official said. The tournament conducted in several venues across the state of Tamil Nadu, including Tirunelveli, Salem, Coimbatore, and Natham will witness numerous domestic stars displaying their talent.

Another MCA official, on condition of anonymity, said Suryakumar has been dedicated to cricket and the bigger things in life. He added: “Surya wants to play all three formats for India, and otherwise, too, he has always been available for Mumbai whenever free. His participation in tournaments like Buchi Babu, KSCA (Gold Cup), and the Ranji Trophy is proof of his commitment and is an inspiration for all the young cricketers in the team.”.

This made the Buchi Babu Invitational tournament, which used to kick off the cricket season with a lot of promise in India’s domestic calendar, look pale for the last few years in terms of strong participation. This was the time when the top draws, virtually everyone who was present in the list of Test stars and even Indian skippers, used to compete in this tournament.

Interestingly, Sourav Ganguly, while playing for India after his comeback in the mid-2000s, played the Buchi Babu tournament after being dropped by Greg Chappell, who was then the coach of India. With Suryakumar Yadav in the mix, it would certainly help the tournament regain a bit of its lost glory, and that itself would be a glorious pat on the back for domestic cricket, which has been the backbone of Indian cricket in maintaining and growing the cricketing structure in the country.

Currently getting some rest, the Indian players will be flying high in their next assignment against Bangladesh in a two-match Test series which starts from September 19 in Chennai. Suryakumar’s involvement in domestic cricket testifies to his commitment to the game and his constant effort to keep one step ahead in any format.
