In a high-octane contest at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Tilak Varma emerged as the top-scorer for Mumbai Indians, anchoring their innings with a fluent 33-ball 59 as MI edged past Delhi Capitals by 12 runs in a nail-biter. It marked Tilak’s second consecutive half-century, coming on the heels of his much-debated ‘retired out’ moment against Lucknow Super Giants — a tactical decision that sparked widespread discussion among fans and experts alike.

The move had divided opinions, especially since MI failed to clinch a win in that match. However, Tilak has now addressed the decision, clarifying that it was entirely driven by the team’s strategic requirements. Speaking to Star Sports after the win over Delhi, Tilak explained his mindset during that situation.

“Nothing negative at all. The team made the call with the match scenario in mind, and I trusted that judgment,” he said. “It’s really about how you look at it — I chose to see it positively. I’ve always told the coaching staff I’m comfortable batting in any position, and I’ll give my 100% wherever I play.”

Tilak’s maturity was on full display yet again on Sunday, guiding MI to an imposing total of 205 for 5. Vital cameos from Ryan Rickelton (41 off 25), Suryakumar Yadav (40 off 28), and Naman Dhir (38 off 17) added muscle to the innings.

But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. At one stage, Delhi Capitals were cruising at 119 for 1, threatening to snatch the game away. That’s when MI turned to their ‘impact sub’ — veteran spinner Karn Sharma. In a masterstroke, suggested by skipper Rohit Sharma and approved by head coach Mahela Jayawardene, Karn came into the attack and changed the game, bagging 3 for 36 and triggering a dramatic collapse.

A visibly relieved Hardik Pandya praised the leggie for showing courage under pressure. “Karn was fantastic. Bowling with such heart at a small ground isn’t easy. He turned the game around for us,” Pandya said post-match. “And yes, winning in games like this feels even more special — it tests your character.”

Pandya also acknowledged Karun Nair’s explosive 89, admitting MI were briefly clueless in the face of his onslaught. “He took his chances and executed really well — hats off to him,” Hardik added.

Three run-outs in quick succession, along with MI’s sharp fielding and never-say-die attitude, ultimately sealed the win. For Mumbai Indians, it was only their second victory of the season — but one that could turn the tide in their campaign.
