Tilak Varma underlined the value of anchoring an innings after producing a career-defining knock that powered the Mumbai Indians to a dominant 99-run win over the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in IPL 2026. Coming into the match on the back of four straight defeats, Mumbai desperately needed a statement performance—and Tilak delivered in style.

His unbeaten 101 off just 45 balls not only rescued MI from early trouble but also lifted them to a competitive 199/5, a total that eventually proved far beyond Gujarat’s reach. Reflecting on his innings, Tilak highlighted the importance of spending time at the crease—something he felt he had missed in earlier matches this season.
“It was very important for the team and for me,” he said. “I hadn’t spent much time in the middle in the last few games, so my focus was to stay at the wicket and then adapt according to the situation.”

The left-hander’s innings was a perfect blend of composure and calculated aggression. After steadying the ship alongside Naman Dhir following an early collapse triggered by Kagiso Rabada, Tilak shifted gears brilliantly in the death overs. His ability to accelerate at the right moment turned a competitive total into a match-winning one. He also stressed the importance of staying grounded despite the emphatic win.
“We shouldn’t look too far ahead. Every game is like a knockout for us,” he explained. “We know our strength, but it’s important to keep working hard and focus on one match at a time.”

Interestingly, Tilak Varma revealed an animated mid-innings interaction with MI captain Hardik Pandya, whose high energy played a role in lifting his confidence. “Hardik bhai was very charged up, telling me ‘you can do it’,” Tilak said. “I just told him to calm down a bit because I needed to stay focused.”
The innings also showcased Tilak’s adaptability, particularly on Ahmedabad’s slow black-soil pitch. Recognising the lack of bounce, he adjusted his approach by targeting straighter boundaries instead of playing across the line—an adjustment that proved crucial.
“On such wickets, you need to play straight and read the conditions well,” he noted. Tilak also opened up about his preferred batting position. While he enjoys batting at No. 3, he remains flexible for the team’s needs. “I’m comfortable anywhere, but number three is where I enjoy batting the most,” he added.

With the ball, MI completed a clinical performance. Ashwani Kumar starred with 4/24, while Mitchell Santner and Allah Ghazanfar chipped in with key wickets to bundle out GT for just 100 in under 16 overs. The comprehensive win not only ended Mumbai’s losing streak but also reignited their IPL 2026 campaign. More importantly, Tilak Varma’s century served as a reminder of MI’s batting depth—and their potential to turn the season around quickly.
