Two knocks in the same Test innings have taken the top position in this list. It was the Wellington Test between New Zealand and Sri Lanka that started on 15 December. In the same Test, Tom Latham (264*) played the highest knock by an opener while carrying his bat in a completed Test innings – standing at the fifth position in this article.

Starting their second innings by trailing 296 runs, Sri Lanka ended the day three on 20/3. It was a very challenging situation for the other visiting players to at least save the game and then something extraordinary happened.

Resuming the day four on 20/3, Sri Lanka ended the day on 259/3 as both the unbeaten overnight batsmen Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews remained unbeaten after the end of the full day’s play. At the end of that day, Mendis was batting on 116 runs and Mathews was batting on 117 runs. They had the brave unbroken 246-run partnership for the fourth wicket at the stumps on day four.

However, they still had to fight on day five to save that game and the lucky rain helped them widely on the final day of the game. While only 13 overs were possible on day five, Sri Lanka finished the day on 287/3 with the unbroken 274 runs partnership between Mendis and Mathews for the fourth wicket. Mendis remained unbeaten on 141 off 335 balls (16 fours) and Mathews was not out on 120 off 323 balls (11 fours).
