Indian skipper Virat Kohli brought up his 18th Test ton with a magnificent six of Suranga Lakmal as India declared their second innings on 352/8 during the first Test at Eden Gardens.

Coincidentally, this was also Kohli’s 50th international century and also his 11th Test ton as Indian skipper. It was his third hundred against Sri Lanka came in breathtaking fashion as he stepped out to Lakmal, hit him over the extra-cover region and roared in delight. He also equaled the record of Hashim Amla for being the fastest to score 50 international centuries in terms of innings as both did it in 348 innings.

Fastest to 50 international centuries: –

Virat Kohli – 348
Hashim Amla – 348
Sachin Tendulkar – 376
Ponting – 418
Lara – 465

In the list of most Test centuries by an Indian, Virat Kohli is now sixth on the list. Only Mohammad Azharuddin (22) Virender Sehwag (23) Sunil Gavaskar (34) Rahul Dravid (36) and Sachin Tendulkar (51) are ahead of him. In the list of most centuries as an Indian skipper, the 29-year-old has equaled Gavaskar’s tally of 11.

After beginning on a cautious note, Kohli decided to attack to the bowlers, especially in the post-lunch session. However, as wickets fell at regular intervals, he held one end and kept the scoreboard ticking. As he neared his century, Kohli cut loose and smashed the Lankan bowlers to all-over the park. As India set a target of 231 for the visitors, Kohli remained unbeaten on 104.
