Currently, the Indian cricket team is going through a purple patch as they are No. 1 team in ODIs and T20Is. India skipper Virat Kohli and his men are playing ruthless cricket as they have the capability to outplay every opposition so that they can claim undisputed superiority.
However, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag is unhappy with one particular characteristic of Kohli, who is known for his fitness and agility and has a talent of taking cheeky singles. While it is important to keep the scoreboard ticking, Sehwag reckons that a player mustn’t give away his wicket for the sake of just 1 run. When stating the same, he even mentioned that this is not his theory but this was told to him by the ‘god’ himself, Sachin Tendulkar.
During an interview with India TV, Sehwag said, “Tendulkar emphasised time and again that you should not give away your wicket for a single. Your wicket is so precious and can’t just waste it in search of that single, that one run holds no value.”
Viru was unhappy with Kohli’s recently-found love for taking singles in the third man region, as he said, “If you observe his batting techniques in the recently concluded series, Kohli played most of the balls towards third-man region, which he did not play so often previously. There must be a reason for the shot selection and only he will be able to tell about it. But, I think Kohli should have converted his innings of 92 in the second ODI at Eden Gardens into a century as he got dismissed while playing the ball towards third man.”
On being asked about Virat’s poor run, Sehwag retorted, “Every batsman goes through a rough patch and it is completely normal. In the last series against Sri Lanka, he scored quite a lot of runs and this is where the law of averages comes into play. And hopefully in the coming series against New Zealand and Sri Lanka, Kohli will score runs and convert them to centuries as well.”
