The young Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar is treating the UK tour as a benefit for him as he feels that if the pacer gets the swing, the spinners will also be getting the drift. He is also confident about the fact that he is capable of adapting to the English conditions.

Sundar will travel to the Old Blighty as part of the Indian team for the one-day and Twenty20 series. He was the player of the Series in the Nidahas Trophy Twenty20 tournament that India won in Sri Lanka earlier this year, Washington was excited at the prospect of playing in England. He said, “It has always been my dream to play in England. Playing there challenges you as a cricketer.”

Washington is known for his efficiency in his bowling along with a lot of subtle variations and harnessing the angles. And he is a left-handed batsman with natural ball-striking ability as well. The lanky spinner varies his trajectory and does spin the ball to achieve drift and dip. He uses his height completely in order to turn and bounce the ball or skid through by employing a different release point and seam position.

The youngster is not agitated by the pressures of operating with the new ball, as he is used to bowling in the powerplay overs. Washington stays calm in stressful situations and has the clarity of thought to execute plans. He said, “You look for small things in a batsman, try to surprise him with your delivery. When you bowl with the new ball, you [have] got to use the seam well, even if you are a spinner.”

While control is the essence of Washington’s bowling, he does mix it up to catch the batsman unawares; the off-spinner has an effective yorker. Sundar tries to deliver with the bat for India. He said, “Although we are unlikely to get green-tops for limited overs matches in England, the ball should move around in the conditions. Perhaps, I might have to check my elaborate back-lift, play a lot more down the ground. Of course, you have to put away the short balls with cuts and pulls.”

Washington will journey to England with belief and expectations.
