Team India flexed their muscles in the third T20I against Zimbabwe, securing a convincing 23-run victory in Harare. This win puts them in a commanding position, leading the five-match series 2-1. The match was a showcase of both experience and rising talent. Skipper Shubman Gill led from the front with a blistering 66 off 49 deliveries, setting the tone for a strong batting performance. Youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal chipped in with a quickfire 36, adding momentum to the innings.

India’s batting depth was further bolstered by the return of key players like Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube. This fresh energy proved vital, especially after the dismissal of Abhishek Sharma. Stepping up to the plate, Ruturaj Gaikwad cracked a crucial 49 off 28 balls, while Samson’s cameo ensured India posted a formidable total of 182/4 on the board.

Zimbabwe’s chase started disastrously as their top order crumbled, leaving them reeling at a precarious 19/3. This is where Washington Sundar emerged as the hero for India. Not only did he claim crucial wickets, but he also revealed a fascinating anecdote about one dismissal.

“Just before the delivery to Johnathan Campbell, Riyan Parag, who came in as a substitute, jokingly told me it would be great if he could take a catch. It was satisfying to execute that and give him a chance,” Washington Sundar shared in the post-match interview.

Sundar’s bowling strategy, particularly against Zimbabwe’s key batsmen, proved highly effective. His off-spin bowling restricted the hosts to a manageable 159/6, despite a valiant effort from Dion Myers (65* off 49) and Clive Madande (37 off 26). Sundar’s exceptional spell of 3/15 in four overs earned him a well-deserved Player of the Match award.

Speaking further, Washington Sundar revealed his approach: “Sikandar Raza looked dangerous from the outset, so I’m glad I managed to dismiss him early. Even with the last wicket, I knew the batsman would look for big shots on the leg side, so I deliberately bowled it wider.”

After limited playing time with Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2024, Sundar is clearly relishing the opportunity to represent India and showcase his talent. Looking ahead to the remaining two matches, he expressed confidence in the team’s ability to secure the series win.

“Playing every game for India and performing well is a privilege,” Washington Sundar said. “Even though I wasn’t playing much in the IPL, I kept working on my skills. I believed my hard work would pay off, and it’s certainly showing in this series. There are only a couple of spinners in the squad, so I’m confident Ravi Bishnoi and I will continue playing a crucial role.”

With a crucial win under their belt and a strong bowling attack led by the in-form Sundar, Team India appears well on their way to clinching the series victory against Zimbabwe.
