Gujarat Titans all-rounder Washington Sundar recently weighed in on the much-debated Impact Player rule in the IPL with a rather cheeky but grounded response. When asked about his views on the rule, Sundar avoided making a definitive call and instead shifted the spotlight onto the fans.

“You really have to ask the audience,” Washington Sundar told The Times of India.  “They’ll give you better answers and a lot more entertainment. I don’t think I have any control over changing rules, nor would I consider doing anything like that.” The Impact Player rule, introduced in 2023, continues to spark discussion.

While some argue that it allows for more aggressive batting and makes the game more thrilling, others believe it disrupts the balance, favoring bat-heavy sides.  Interestingly, Washington Sundar was named an Impact Player in GT’s recent clash against the Rajasthan Royals but wasn’t eventually used. The Titans, however, cruised to a 58-run victory, showcasing the depth and flexibility of their squad.

Having spent time with the Indian national side under new head coach Gautam Gambhir, Sundar praised the former India opener for helping him evolve.

“Gauti bhai has helped me understand my potential and how to approach the game in different situations. It’s been a massive learning curve. My mindset and self-awareness have grown a lot under his guidance,” Washington Sundar said, reflecting on the value of mentoring in shaping his cricketing journey.

Sundar also highlighted the crucial role GT head coach Ashish Nehra plays in building the team’s adaptability and confidence.

“I’ve known Ashu bhai for years since our time together at RCB. He encourages players to read situations and adapt early. That’s something our team has done well this season,” Sundar explained. “He puts a lot of emphasis on preparation, and it shows across the squad—whether you’re a senior or a youngster, the clarity is there.”

With guidance from Gambhir and Nehra, and the flexibility provided by the Impact Player rule, Sundar seems to be in a great space, ready to contribute to GT’s campaign in whatever way the team demands.
