Wasim Jaffer and former England captain Michael Vaughan have again started their social media sparring with the latter sending another typical quick-witted response. Not too long ago, Vaughan had taken to his social media and voiced the need to restructure Test cricket, citing that the format needed to be divided into two divisions while calling for equal distribution of money amongst Test-playing nations.

True to his form, Jaffer replied with his trademark wit, putting up a screen grab of the World Test Championship 2024-25 standing with England buried at the bottom. Jaffer’s response read: “Timing is everything. And Michael is a wise man who understands that. That’s why he didn’t tweet this a month ago when the WTC table looked like this.”

England’s position in the WTC standings took a severe beating after their Test tour of India from January to March this year, with them losing the series 1-4 to Rohit Sharma’s team. A pretty dismal series in India was somewhat redeemed as they cleansweeped against West Indies and went on to win both matches against Sri Lanka in their subsequent home Tests.

England now turn their attentions to Sri Lanka for the final Test of the series, which begins at The Oval in London on September 6. Despite not having a host of players, including skipper Ben Stokes, Zak Crawley, and Mark Wood due to various injuries, the hosts should have a very good game.

Meanwhile, India are gearing up for the two-match Test series against Bangladesh, starting from September 19 in Chennai and Kanpur. The series will also mark Gautam Gambhir’s maiden assignment as the Head Coach of the Indian team following a dismal series defeat against Sri Lanka during its white-ball tour. These matches are also important preparation for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia that starts in November 2024.
