Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been two of the most influential batters in India’s ODI setup for more than a decade. Both players recently reminded fans of their enduring quality during the ODI series against the West Indies, with Kohli scoring a century in Thiruvananthapuram and Rohit Sharma hitting a hundred in Guwahati during a record run chase.

Their continued performances have also sparked discussions about their relationship and the mutual respect between two of India’s modern-day batting greats. Former India batter Wasim Jaffer recently shared his perspective, drawing comparisons with the legendary players he shared the dressing room with during his international career.

Jaffer pointed out that professional competition between top players is natural, but sustained success at the highest level often creates a strong sense of respect between teammates.

“They have played a lot of cricket together. There is a bit of professional rivalry, but eventually you respect each other. When I was playing, there were Sachin, Rahul, Sourav, Laxman, and Sehwag,” Wasim Jaffer said on his YouTube channel.

The former batter recalled how several world-class players coexisted in the Indian team during his playing days. According to Jaffer, that environment was built around competition but also a deep appreciation of each player’s ability.

“They were all greats, but that mutual respect was evident. Virat and Rohit are modern greats, and they have a lot of respect for each other. The new generation should learn this from them,” he added.

Rohit’s performance in the West Indies series added another milestone to his already impressive ODI career. The India opener became the third Indian batter after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to cross the 12,000-run mark in ODI cricket. His unbeaten 101 in Guwahati played a major role in India’s successful chase and further highlighted his ability to produce impactful performances at the top of the order.

Jaffer has also previously spoken about the transformation that took place in Rohit’s career after he became a regular ODI opener. According to the former India batter, the move to the top of the order allowed Rohit to make full use of his natural ability and changed his impact on the format.

“Rohit Sharma became Rohit Sharma when he started to open. We saw a different side of Rohit Sharma when he got a chance to open at the 2013 Champions Trophy. He had the talent and potential, but he has never looked back after 2013. Batting in the top-order is the best place in ODIs, and he grabbed the opportunity with both hands,” Wasim Jaffer concluded.

With Kohli and Rohit continuing to contribute in ODI cricket, their experience remains an important part of India’s batting setup while the next generation gradually takes on greater responsibility.
