Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bowl first. India handed debut cap to Venkatesh Iyer while Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammad Siraj returned in the playing XI. New Zealand brought Mark Chapman, Rachin Ravindra, Todd Astle and Lockie Ferguson in the playing XI.

Martin Guptill and Daryl Mitchell walked out to open the innings for New Zealand while Bhuvneshwar Kumar had the new ball in his hand. Guptill took a single on the second ball to get to the non-striker’s end. Bhuvi bowled a delicious inswinger which castled Mitchell for a golden duck and gave New Zealand an early jolt.

Mark Chapman, replacing Kane Williamson, walked out at number 3 for New Zealand. He batted with intent and counter-attacking approach to tackle the Indian bowlers. He punished Mohammed Siraj and Deepak Chahar for 16 and 15 runs respectively.

Chapman raised his maiden T20I fifty and was looking threatening. Ravichandran Ashwin returned for his fourth over and dismissed Chapman for 63 runs in 50 balls, where he hit six fours and two sixes.

Glenn Phillips came out at number four and Ashwin trapped him in front of the wicket for a duck to bring India back in the game.
